Integrating Indigenous Knowledge in Guidance Counsellor Training Programmes

Getrude Nyakutse, Sindisiwe Malindzisa

This paper sets out to investigate a way of integrating traditional African counselling techniques into existing western counsellor training programmes. It examines the western and African world views about the individual’s beliefs, the role of the ancestors and spirits in an African’ life. The observation was that the skills acquired in the counsellor training programmes that area based on western on western counselling techniques do not adequately equip the Guidance counsellor who works with traditional African clients, to effectively deal with their problems. The paper puts forward a proposal to start integrating some aspects of African counselling techniques into western oriented counsellor training programmes that are currently offered.
